Knee braces for enduro /motocross: the Purchasing Guide

By Jack Dancède , on 6 November 2022 , updated on 7 December 2025 - 11 minutes to read

Many motocross or enduro riders still think that knee braces are reserved for the eclopés or the old breakers. This is a monumental mistake! In motocross as in enduro, the knees are the n°1 fuses. The currency is simple: it is better to invest €500 in protection than to lose 6 months of life (and salary) on a hospital bed after a crusader breaks up.

Prevent rather than cure: why switch to orthotics?

Historically, orthotics have been a tool for post-operative rehabilitation. Today, it has become a preventive performance equipment, used by all pros, even those who have never been injured.

⁇ The technical difference (Crucial):
  • A Classical knee pad (plastic shell) protects against IMPACT (shock against a stone).
  • A orthosis protects against IMPACT + TORSION (abnormal knee rotation).
It is this rigid chassis that prevents your knee from spinning in a rut or on a short reception.

The statistics are clear: Knee injuries (notably ACL – Anterior Crossed Ligament) account for a major share of all-terrain injuries. Medical studies show that wearing orthotics can reduce the risk of ligament injury by more than 50%.

The real cost: Orthotics vs Surgery

Compared to simple knee pads, orthotics represent a budget (from €300 to €900). But do the calculation: 6 months off work, surgical fee overruns, 40 physiotherapy sessions... A pair of orthoses is ultimately the cheapest insurance on the market.

Orthotic Tests EVS Axis Sport
A meticulous adjustment is key (here with the EVS Axis Sport during our test phase): a good orthosis is forgotten after 10 minutes of rolling.

It is an urban legend. Modern orthotics (especially carbon models) are designed to follow the biomechanical articulation. They limit hyper-extension (when the leg stretches too much) but do not interfere with the natural flexing required for piloting.

11 best knee braces for enduro and motocross

LEATT Orthotic Range

Leatt offers a very advanced medical approach. Their particularity? Medical certification throughout the range.

LEATT Z-FRAME (The medical entry-level)

Do not rely on its “placed” price. The Z-Frame offers the same medical chassis as the top models, but in injected (composite) version. It is the ideal orthosis to start with real ligament protection without breaking the bank.

LEATT C-FRAME Pro Carbon (the mono-arm revolution)

It is a UFO. Leatt removed the inner hinge to offer direct contact with the bike. Result: unparalleled fineness between the legs, fewer points of compression on the inside of the knees and less wear on the motorcycle’s kit deco. Ideal if you have large calves or hate feeling "displaced" from the bike.

LEATT C Carbon Frame
At the end of a season, wear, scratches and embedded dirt did not affect the capabilities of this LEATT X Frame. A good cleaning (especially of the joint mechanisms) and she will leave for 1 more season.

LEATT X-FRAME (The Carbon Compromise)

More classic than the C-Frame, the X-Frame uses a very rigid injected carbon chassis. Its inner hinge is refined by 40% so you don't get in the way.

Orthotics RXR Protect

Cocorico! RXR is a French brand that offers a different approach with its ASA (Air Shock Absorber) technology often used in their vests, but here on a pure mechanical orthosis juice.

RXR PROTECT X-CROSS

It is the most adjustable orthosis on the market. Its metal ‘skeleton’ concept allows it to be twisted (literally) so that it perfectly fits the shape of your leg. Rustic, but terribly effective for atypical morphologies.

Range Orthotics Alpinestars PLASMA (New 2025)

Alpinestars completely redesigned its range this year with the arrival of the material Nucleon Plasma (bio-sourced) for internal comfort.

Alpinestars RK-1 Plasma

The light entry-level. Flexible plastic structure, ideal for leisure enduro where comfort takes precedence over absolute rigidity.

Alpinestars RK-7 Plasma

The technical choice. We go upmarket with a more rigid frame and especially the system of cross straps (X-Strap) which literally locks the orthosis on the leg.

SuperTech RK-10 Plasma (Carbon Jewelry)

34 layers of carbon. This is what it takes to achieve this incredible rigidity with a feather weight. This is the orthosis of the Factory pilots. Attention, it is pure sports equipment (not medically certified), designed for performance.

POD Active Knee Orthotics

POD is the world reference for sports medical orthotics. Their secret? ‘Human Motion’, a synthetic ligament in the hinge that mimics the natural movement of the knee.

POD K8 3.0 Carbon (the 2025 novelty)

The K8 is finally evolving! New chassis in Forged carbon (guaranteed 5 years!) and new ball protection Level 2. This is the current must-have for those seeking maximum security.

POD K4 2.0 (The Best-Seller)

It is the best-selling orthosis in the world, and for good reason. It offers the same technology as the K8 (hinge, comfort) but with a cheaper composite chassis. The unbeatable quality/price ratio.

Knee Orthotics EVS

EVS AXIS SPORT

A hybrid structure (Alu/Nylon) that offers rigidity close to the top of the range for a contained price.

See the Freenduro test of this EVS axis sport

EVS AXIS PRO

Full Carbon/Alu version. Maximum stiffness, no twisting possible. It is solid, made to last for years.

Mobius Knee Orthotics

Mobius X8 (cable clamping)

Mobius revolutionised the market with its CCRS system: a cable that goes around the joint to maintain it, just like your own ligaments. The clamping wheel makes it possible to adjust the tension through the trousers while rolling!

The reference of US Pros: Asterisk Carbon Cell 1 (CC1)

Asterisk Carbon Cell 1Impossible to make a complete guide without quoting Asterisk, the inventor of the modern motocross orthosis. Their latest model, the Carbon Cell 1 (CC1), is considered by many to be the “Holy Grail”.

  • Why is it top? It is the finest orthosis in the world. Once worn, it is almost invisible under the pants.
  • Why is it not in our ranking? The Californian brand suffers from a very capricious distribution in Europe. It is currently very difficult to find in stock in France and after-sales service can be complicated to manage remotely.

⁇ Our advice: If you have the opportunity to go to the USA, bring back a pair. Otherwise, the POD K8 or Leatt C-Frame are safer alternatives in terms of availability and warranty in France.

How to get your orthotics reimbursed? (Practical Guide)

This is the hidden advantage of high-end orthotics (Leatt, Pod, EVS). Through their certification EU CA014741, they are considered to be medical equipment.

⁇ The calculation is simple:

Social Security reimburses on a fixed basis (approximately €102.29 per orthosis). Your mutual can then complete this amount.

Example: For a pair at 500 €, you can recover about 120 € of the Security + potentially 100 to 300 € of your mutual according to your contract "Small Appliances".

The procedure to follow (strict order to respect!)

  1. BEFORE the purchase: Consult your sports or treating doctor. Tell them about your pain or instability (this is the medical reason).
  2. Get a Ordinance for “Bilateral articulated knee orthosis for ligament instability”.
  3. Buy your orthotics (keep the invoice with the homologation mention carefully).
  4. Send the winning trio to the Sécu: Order + Care Sheet (provided by the seller) + Invoice.

How to choose your size? (Critical step)

Let us be clear: a poorly adjusted orthosis is useless. If it is too large, it will rotate around the knee at the time of impact. If it is too small, it will cut off circulation and create cramps.

The infallible measurement method:

Don't rely on your pants size! Most brands (Leatt, Pod, Mobius) ask to measure the width of knee (with a sliding foot, it is ideal) or circumference 15cm above the centre of the kneecap.

The trick of experience: If you are between two sizes, always take the size EN-DESSOUS. The foams will settle after 10 hours of rolling and the straps will stretch. An orthosis must be “fit” from the start.

Technical analysis: Carbon vs Composite injected

This is the annoying question: Why put $800 in carbon (like the POD K8 or Leatt C-Frame) while composite models (POD K4, Leatt Z-Frame) cost half as much?

Twisting stiffness: The nerve of war

The difference is played out during extreme twisting. Imagine that your foot remains stuck in a rut while your body and the motorcycle continue to rotate:

  • Composite (Injected): The plastic/fiberglass frame has a certain “flexibility”. Under a huge constraint, it will deform slightly before blocking the movement. It is more comfortable for leisure, but some of the torsional energy can reach the ligament.
  • Carbon (Rigid): Carbon fiber has absolute structural rigidity. She doesn't bend. In case of twisting, 100% Strength is transferred from the knee to the solid bones (femur and tibia) via the chassis, totally sparing the ligament. This is the ultimate protection for competition.

Verdict: Composite is enough for 80% pilots (Rando, Enduro Leisure). Carbon is imperative for intensive Motocross / Enduro, big jumps, or if your knees are already fragile.

Technological dual: Cable (Mobius) vs Synthetic Ligament (POD)

Not all orthotics work the same. Here is a comparative analysis of the two most advanced systems on the market to help you choose your “feeling”.

The MOBIUS system (CCRS)The POD (Human Motion) system
The principle: A steel cable (Kevlar/Nylon) goes around the joint in “8”. The more you bend the knee, the more the cable stretches and plates the kneecap shell against your leg.

Feelings: It is a maintenance ASSETS. You feel the orthosis tightening when you bend your leg. It is psychologically ultra-reassuring: we feel that the kneecap can not get out of its axis.
The principle: A hinge that uses a flexible polymer ‘synthetic ligament’. There is no hard mechanics (gearings), it is the material that works.

Feelings: It is a maintenance PASSIVE and FLUID. The orthosis is completely forgotten (zero resistance, zero noise) until the hyperextension where the ligament tends to block sharply. This is the choice of those who want total freedom.

Hello, thank you for the complete article.
I don't see the Asterisk Carbon Cell 1 which is often considered the best orthotics in the American media. Do you confirm that they are not EU CA014741 certified?

We did not integrate the Asterisks, because compared to other brands the Asterisks are harder to find in France and it was not possible to know if they were certified EU CA014741 or not
