The best insurers specialized in motorcycles

Motorcycle specialist insurers are insurance companies that focus their risk cover business on the insurance of motorbikes, scooters and other motorised two-wheelers. Unlike general insurers, which offer a wider range of insurance products for different categories of vehicles, the core business of motorcycle insurers is biker coverage.

This means that they have in-depth expertise in this area, with a very good knowledge of the specific risks associated with riding motorcycles. They often offer specific covers for biker accessories and motorcycle equipment, as well as services tailored to the needs of bikers such as coverage options for motorcycle races and events.

Motorcycle specialist insurers also tend to offer competitive rates for motorcycle insurance because of their expertise and concentration of activity on this type of vehicle. They can also offer more flexible coverage options, such as seasonal insurance policies for motorcyclists who only drive during certain times of the year.

The best general insurers for motorcycles

General insurers are insurance companies that offer a diverse range of insurance products to cover different types of risks. These insurers can offer insurance for vehicles, homes, health, civil liability, travel, pets, businesses, etc. Unlike specialised insurers that focus on a specific area, general insurers have broader expertise and can offer insurance products to meet the varied needs of their customers. General insurers sometimes work with insurance brokers to help their clients find the coverage best suited to their needs and budget.

Therefore, the coverage for motorcycles offered by a general insurer may be less comprehensive and less adapted to the specific needs of bikers than that offered by an insurer specialized in motorcycles. But they are often more "big" than specialized insurers they can sometimes offer attractive rates.

Legal obligations in terms of insurance for motorcycles

The motorcycle insurance obligation is a legal requirement imposed on motorcycle owners in France. All motorbikes, whether used on public roads or not, must be insured:u minimum with liability insurance. This insurance guarantees the coverage of damage caused to third parties in the event of an accident involving the motorcycle, such as property and personal injury caused to other persons. Motorcyclists must be able to present valid proof of insurance when using their motorcycle on public roads. Failure to comply with this obligation may result in fines, penalties and even criminal proceedings in the event of an accident caused by an uninsured motorcyclist.

Insurance obligations for enduro motorcycles

In France, theMotorcycle insurance obligation also applies to enduro motorcycles, even if they are not used on public roads. This means that owners of enduro motorcycles must take out at least civil liability insurance to cover damage caused to third parties in the event of an accident involving the motorcycle. even when used on private land or closed circuits.

The different types of insurance

There are different types/options of motorcycle insurance that can be offered by insurance companies, such as:

  1. Liability insurance : This is compulsory insurance in France for motorcycles and covers damage caused to third parties in the event of an accident involving the motorcycle.
  2. All-risk insurance : This insurance covers damage caused to the motorcycle, as well as damage caused to third parties in the event of an accident.
  3. Third-party insurance plus : This insurance covers damage caused to the motorcycle as well as damage caused to third parties in the event of an accident, as well as certain additional guarantees such as theft, fire, natural disasters, etc.
  4. AIntermediate insurance : This insurance is a compromise between civil liability insurance and all-risk insurance, it covers damage caused to third parties in the event of an accident involving the motorcycle as well as certain additional guarantees.
  5. Ancillary or flight insurance : This insurance covers motorcycle accessories such as helmets, gloves, boots, etc. against damage, theft or loss.
  6. Driver's insurance : This insurance covers the driver of the motorcycle in the event of a responsible accident or without an identified third party.

It is important to note that the types of insurance may vary depending on the insurance companies and the specific coverage offered in each policy. Before choosing your insurance company, you must therefore pay attention to the included or optional guarantees offered in the insurance contract for your motorcycle.

How to cancel your motorcycle insurance?

Are you planning to cancel your motorcycle insurance? Regardless of the reason or time chosen, there is a specific procedure clearly defined by law. Depending on your situation, it may be necessary to meet cancellation deadlines for your motorcycle insurance.

It should be noted that:after the first year commitment, under the Hamon Law, it is possible to terminate your motorcycle insurance contract at any time without needing any justification from your insurer and without charge or penalty.

In any case it should be known that, thanks to theoi Chatel, your insurance company is required to inform you of the approach of the due date of your contract at least 15 days before it. You dis then 20 days from the date of dispatch this notice of expiry to indicate that you do not wish to renew your contract. If you do not comply with this 20-day period, your cancellation request will not be effective and the contribution will be due

In order to proceed with a termination, it is necessary to send a termination letter to the insurer by registered mail with acknowledgement of receipt at least 2 months before the contract expiry date (which corresponds to the anniversary date of the first subscription).

If your insurance policy is less than one year old, the cancellation of your motorcycle insurance will only be possible in certain specific cases, without having to pay a penalty.

  • Significant change in your personal or professional situation (for example, if you move)
  • If the insurance company significantly increases your contributions (but it will be hard to argue)
  • If the insurer does not apply a discount on the premium while your bonus improves
  • If you sell (or donate) your motorcycle
  • If someone steals your motorcycle

Selling your motorcycle allows you to terminate your two-wheeler insurance contract without delay (without waiting for the due date or notice, even if the contract is less than one year old). For this, as soon as the sale is made, notify your insurer (either by phone, email or registered mail) and send it as soon as possible a copy of the sales certificate (Cerfa transfer form No 13754*02). The insurer will then suspend your motorcycle insurance guarantees the day after the sale.

What are the criteria to take into account when comparing motorcycle insurance?

When comparing several motorcycle insurance offers, there are several criteria to consider when choosing the best option for your needs. Here are some of the criteria to consider before making your choice:

  1. The proposed covers : It is important to check the different coverages offered by each insurance company. Such as civil liability, legal protection, coverage of property and personal injury, protection against theft and fire, etc.
  2. Franchises : Check the amount of deductibles offered by each insurance company. The aim is to be able to compare the amounts of deductibles you will have to pay in the event of a claim, whether responsible or not. You should be aware that taking out higher deductibles reduces the cost of your insurance premium, but it also means that you will have to pay higher amounts if you have an accident.
  3. The cost of the insurance premium : Compare the rates offered (monthly or yearly) by each motorcycle insurance company for the coverage you are looking for. Be sure to check if discounts are available (e.g. for good drivers, motorcycles with safety features, etc.) but check the duration of the discount (limited or not).
  4. The conditions for compensationn: Check the amounts of compensation offered by each motorcycle insurance company. Some companies may offer higher compensation for property damage or others may offer higher compensation for personal injury, for example.
  5. Customer service : A point sometimes overlooked, but for us fundamental to know if your future insurer will be easily reachable in case of questions or need for assistance following a disaster. So, if possible, find out about the quality of customer service offered by each motorcycle insurance company. Check if the insurer is easily reachable and how is it reachable (email, phone, chat?).

Taking these criteria into account, you should be able to more easily compare the different motorcycle insurance options available and choose the one that best suits your needs.

Useful insurance comparators or gadgets?

Before signing an insurance contract, try to find out more about the company and compare the rates (with equivalent guarantees) with other insurers.
To do this, you can ask your friends/families for their opinions on a particular insurance company.  You can also run parallel or go through insurance comparisons (this is non-binding and free) which will allow you to compare the offers of several insurance companies in just a few clicks. This is why it is considered that insurance comparators are really useful because it makes it possible to form an objective opinion on the rates and the coverages and options of several insurances quickly.
To help you make the choice that best suits your needs, we decided to use 1 renons comparator  Assurland which are a serious and reputable company for many years.

Feel free to tell us in comment if you are satisfied with your motorcycle insurance and also feel free to tell us which insurance company you have chosen (and why) .
